Dr. Phil's New Media Venture: Envoy TV Signs Deal with Charter Amid Legal Battle (2025)

In a bold move amid ongoing legal troubles, Dr. Phil McGraw has secured a significant carriage agreement for his forthcoming media enterprise, Envoy TV. This development occurs while a legal dispute regarding his previous company remains unresolved, adding an intriguing layer to his media endeavors.

Envoy TV, a platform that McGraw introduced in July, is set to enhance its visibility with this distribution deal forged with Charter Communications. This announcement came just two weeks after his previous venture, Merit Street Media, sought bankruptcy protection and initiated legal action against its distribution partner, Trinity Broadcasting. This new accord will ensure that Envoy TV reaches Charter's sizable audience, particularly in major metropolitan areas such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Dallas-Fort Worth, the latter being significant because it serves as the operational hub for both McGraw and Envoy.

In his remarks about this partnership, McGraw expressed his excitement, stating, "I’m thrilled to be putting on the Charter team jersey and launching our new flagship Envoy TV network with my friends at the nation’s leading cable and broadband provider. Their commitment to continuous innovation makes Charter the perfect launchpad for Envoy TV’s ‘particivision’ approach, which aims to entertain, inform, and make a meaningful impact on national audiences. I can’t wait to get started!"

Just like Merit Street Media, the programming lineup for Envoy will include an assortment of shows hosted by McGraw, blending original content with episodes from his well-known syndicated talk program. Additionally, contributions from notable personalities like comedian Steve Harvey will enrich the programming. The term "particivision" that McGraw referenced pertains to a feature within the Envoy TV app that allows users to create and upload their own content, some of which may make its way onto the network’s national feed, further engaging viewers and creating a sense of community.

As of the second quarter of this year, Charter Communications boasted approximately 12.6 million video subscribers through its Spectrum cable operations, indicating a vast potential audience for Envoy TV.

On the legal front, the bankruptcy proceedings related to Merit Street’s Chapter 11 filing are currently underway in a Dallas court. In a contentious twist, Trinity Broadcasting, which agreed to distribute programming from Merit TV starting in early 2024, has countersued Merit Street Media, claiming that McGraw failed to meet expected viewership and advertising revenue goals. Reports suggest that Merit Street typically garnered fewer than 100,000 viewers daily.

During his testimony in September, McGraw mentioned that he had "capitulated" to the Chapter 11 filing, suggesting that if Trinity had persisted in their relationship, it could ultimately have proven to be their most lucrative investment.

Tom Montemagno, executive vice president of programming acquisition for Charter, praised McGraw, stating, "Dr. Phil is a leading and iconic voice in television with a large fan base, and bringing his network to our lineup further expands the entertainment choices available to Spectrum customers at an exceptional value."

As this situation unfolds, it raises questions about the dynamics of media partnerships, the challenges of viewership in a competitive landscape, and the potential future of Dr. Phil's ventures. What are your thoughts on how popular media figures navigate these pressures? Do you think Envoy TV will achieve the success that its predecessor struggled to find, or is the landscape too complicated for even a star like McGraw to navigate?
