Imagine this: the reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion, Tom Aspinall, is willing to give up his title rather than fight a friend. That's the headline, and it's a story that reveals a lot about loyalty and the unpredictable nature of professional fighting.
Aspinall, who recently claimed the undisputed UFC heavyweight title, is preparing for his next big fight. He's set to face Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi, a match that promises fireworks. This fight marks his return after a year-long break.
Following Jon Jones's retirement in June, the heavyweight division has been shaken up, with Aspinall now at the top. During his time away, several top contenders have been vying for their chance at the title.
But here's where it gets controversial: Aspinall has stated that if the UFC offered a title shot to his teammate, Ante Delija, he would vacate the belt. That's right, he'd give up the title rather than face his friend in the Octagon.
During a recent podcast appearance, Aspinall explained his stance. Delija, his training partner, recently entered the UFC and is making waves. Aspinall believes Delija is only a few wins away from a title shot.
Aspinall said, "If I never won a title, I never touched gold before, we’d have to fight. Because that was my dream. But now that I’ve done it, I’d vacate and he could have his time. I wouldn’t fight him." He emphasized that his friendship with Delija is more important than money or titles. He added, "I’ve won the title, I’ve done that, and now I’ve got a few more in me before he’s going to be up there anyway."
Delija's recent victory over Marcin Tybura at UFC Paris has further solidified his position as a rising contender. Before joining the UFC, Delija was the PFL heavyweight champion in 2022.
What do you think about Aspinall's decision? Is loyalty more important than a title defense? Would you like to see more fighters take this approach? Share your thoughts in the comments!
